How to Use Your Local Digital Commons Storage Space

The Digital Commons makes 50 GB of storage space per project available to students and faculty for storing their digital media projects. Please note that this storage is strictly for saving your project, when accessing your saved project, be sure to copy the project to your local computer. When finished, save your work and then transfer your project back to shared storage.

This storage space can only be access from Digital Commons editing workstations. To find a list of computers that can access the DC storage space, please see information about your campus.

NOTE: This space will be deleted at the end of each semester For alternative storage options, see this tutorial.

The first step to using this space is to create space for your project on your campus’ local server.

Turning on & recording with the Canon HF-10 Camera

In this tutorial we will be learning how to turn on and record video using the Canon HF-10 High Definition SD card camera. This camera records video to either internal or an external SDHC card.

1) Selecting the Mode - most Mini-DV camera's turn on by selecting the mode, with the Canon HF-10 the mode is selected independent of turning on or off the camera. To record video set the mode switch found on the right side of the camera to the red film camera icon.

2) Turning on the Camera - To turn on the camera find the "Power" On/Off button located on the top of the camera and press it, this button also turns the camera off.

3) Using the zoom function - To zoom in and out locate the zoom lever found on the top of the camera body. Moving the lever left towards "W" will zoom out and moving it right towards "T" will zoom in. This camera will automatically adjust exposure and focus.

Basic Editing in iMovie 09

Welcome to the Basic Editing in iMovie 08 tutorial. This tutorial will cover the interface, the Project workspace, the Event Library workspace, and basic editing (trimming clips). For more advanced tutorials, please see the topic specific iMovie 09 tutorials located on our website.

The Interface

iMovie 09’s interface is very similiar to iMovie 09 and is divided up into three major sections. The first section is the Project workspace. The Project Library and timeline are now interchangable by a button at the top left hand corner labled "Project Library" The Project workspace is where you can access and build your movie from the files you selected from the Event Library workspace. The Event Library workspace grants you access to all imported footage on your computer, functioning essentially like a media browser, dividing your imported movies into albums.

Saving your iMovie 09 project to the Digital Commons Storage Server

Because iMovie 09 no longer encapsulates media into the project file like iMovie 06, the procedure to backup an iMovie 09 project and media is slightly different than just copying a single file to the Digital Commons Server.

iMovie 09 will autosave all of its data into the users Movies folder. You will notice that there are a number of folders created. Each one has a special purpose and must not be renamed or else iMovie 09 will stop working.

The iMovie Events folder contains all of the media imported into a project.

The iMovie Projects folder will contain all of the actual edit information.

If you have Shared a project out to another program, it may also appear in your Movies folder.
