How to Use Your Local Digital Commons Storage Space

The Digital Commons makes 50 GB of storage space per project available to students and faculty for storing their digital media projects. Please note that this storage is strictly for saving your project, when accessing your saved project, be sure to copy the project to your local computer. When finished, save your work and then transfer your project back to shared storage.

This storage space can only be access from Digital Commons editing workstations. To find a list of computers that can access the DC storage space, please see information about your campus.

NOTE: This space will be deleted at the end of each semester For alternative storage options, see this tutorial.

The first step to using this space is to create space for your project on your campus’ local server.

To create space for your project:
1. Go to https://clc.its.psu.edu/dc
2. Enter your Penn State userID and password and click “Request Digital Commons Storage Space”
3. Select your campus. It is very important that you select the correct campus or you will not be able to access your space.

4. Enter a project name and click either individual project or group project. If you chose group project you can now enter the UserIDs of everyone else assigned to the project so that they will also receive storage space.
5. Next choose yes or no for if it is a course related project and if so enter the course information.
6. Finally fill out any of the optional information and read the terms of use.
7. Click the Agree button and you are finished creating your Digital Commons Storage Space.

To access your storage space:
1. Click on the Access My DC Storage Space icon on the desktop of the Digital Commons workstation.

2. Once you enter your userID and password and you will see a window pop up containing folders for any digital commons storage space you have created or had assigned to you. There will also be a DC icon on the desktop that you can double click to access your space if you close the pop up window.

3. You should save all of your work to the desktop of the editing machine and then transfer the files over to your storage space when you are ready to finish. If you try to save your projects directly to the storage space from inside Garageband or iMovie it will significantly slow down your saving time as well as your work time since the software will be accessing the network drive.
