Digital Commons now has open hours

We’re happy to announce that the Digital Commons now has regularly scheduled open hours:

     Tuesdays, 3pm-5pm
     Thursdays, 9am-noon, 3pm-5pm
     Fridays, 1pm-3pm

During this time you are free to walk in and utilize the Digital Commons without appointment. (However, those with appointments will receive priority if all the equipment is in use.)

To make an appointment to use the Digital Commons, contact Sue Hales (hales@psu.edu, 675-9185).

On a related topic, the Digital Commons has hired a student assistant, Andrew Stout. Welcome, Andrew!

Digital Commons Resources

Digital Commons Room Reservation Request Go in person to the Vairo Library circulation desk and sign the Digital Commons Reservation Book.

  • Do not sign up for more than 2 hours per day.
  • Reservations will be held for 15 minutes, then released if others are waiting.
  • You (or a member of your group) will need your Penn State ID card to check out the Digital Commons key from the front desk.
  • To cancel a request, return in person to the library, call 610-892-1386 or email bw@psulias.psu.edu

Storage Space Request Use this link to create personal or group storage space for each of your projects.

  • For group projects, enter the Penn State user ID for all group members, including your teacher if he or she has requested access to the folder.
  • Only the group leader (the person who initially set up the storage) can add a user at a later date. To do this, view your Digital Commons Storage folders, find the group you need to alter, and edit the member list.

Abington Digital Commons is Now Open!

The Digital Commons at Abington is now open. Please come by and check it out on the bottom floor of the Library.

Digital Commons at Shenango is now open!

The Shenango Digital commons is now open in Forker Lab 124 and 125. If you would like to sign up for Digital Commons time, please stop by Sharon Hall 202 to schedule. There is help available in these rooms during the hours of operation if you have any questions.

New Digital Commons Workshops being offered

The Digital Commons Workshops are a series of small-group (~4 people) hands-on training sessions designed to give you a brief introduction to various digital media concepts and software packages. The sessions are short (around an hour) so you can easily fit them into your day.

Penn State Greater Allegheny's "Chancellor's Prize for Moving Media"

Dear Directors & Friends of ABSENCE:

The Editorial Board of Absence: Penn State Greater Allegheny's Literary & Art Magazine has asked me to announce a new addition to the annual Celebration of the Arts Event: The Chancellor’s Prize for Moving Media, which is a cash award given to the best piece submitted.

Submissions to the Moving Media category will be juried by the Editorial Board for a screening that will be held as a part of the Celebration events on April 23rd at 7pm in the Ostermayer Room of the SCC. Submissions will be accepted until Monday, April 7th and should be turned in using the guidelines listed below. Questions regarding submission guidelines should be addressed to Professor Hepner at lah40@psu.edu.

Moving Media Category Specifications:
-Under 4 minutes in duration
-Created the 2007-2008 Academic Year
-720x480 (“Full Quality DV” setting) Quicktime Movie File*
-Does not contain author’s name in the visuals
-Files are burned to a Data CD or DVD (not iDVD)
-CD or DVD has student’s name and PSU email address written on it in permanent marker and placed in a sleeve or case

The Digital Commons facilities in the Business Building will be available in Spring 08'.

Open House introduces faculty, staff and students to the Digital Commons

The Digital Commons Open House on April 24th was a big success, with a good turnout and a lot of enthusiasm generated! If you were unable to attend, just contact me (hales@psu.edu) to set up an appointment for your very own private tour. Faculty, feel free to bring your students, or speak to me about how you might utilize the Digital Commons in your courses.
