ENGL 15: Creating a “Year in Review” Retrospective Podcast and Video

Dr. Peter Froehlich and Dr. Maggie Froehlich assign one podcast and one video in their four sections of English 15 taught at Hazleton.

The podcast is a podcast narrative highlighting a year in American history (post 1945) of the students choosing.  For the video, the students were put into groups by era (e.g. the early 1990s) to create a 10-minute video narrative based on their combined years.

Benefits

Students exposed to writing for new media. Students uploading podcasts to iTunes have a better sense of who the “audience” is in terms of writing.

Grading Process: 

The podcast and video both count as an “essay” writing assignment in this course and are graded primarily on the quality of the writing or structure as well as creativity.

The podcast is worth 20% of the total grade and the video is worth 25% of the grade.

Turning on and using the Flip Mino HD

The power button is located on the right side in relation to the LCD screen. Hold it down for 1 second and release to turn on the camera.

Recording with the Flip Mino HD

  1. To start recording press the red button located beneath the LCD screen.
  2. To stop recording press the red button a second time.
  3. While you are recording you can zoom in & out by pressing the + and - buttons above and below the record button respectively (note: these buttons will only show up while you are recording)

Reviewing your footage

  1. To review your footage press the PLAY button located beneath the LCD screen while not recording.
  2. You can move between clips by using the left and right arrow keys located on either side of the record button.

Deleting your footage

  1. To delete your footage press the Trash Can button located beneath the LCD screen.
  2. Use the left and right arrow keys to choose YES to delete only the selected clip, ALL to delete everything on the camera, or NO to keep the clips saved.

My (Flip camera) has stopped working. It will no longer power up regardless of how long I have charged the battery. What can I do?

Reset your camera by either

  1. holding down the power button for 10 seconds, or
  2. insert a pin into the reset hole located inside the tripod mount on the bottom of the camera
