Capturing video from the JVC deck into iMovie06'

* Follow all directions EXACTLY as stated, because if any steps are not done correctly, it's very likely that things will not operate as intended.
* If iMovie reports "No Camera Attached", quit out of iMovie HD, then turn the JVC VCR off and then back on. Then relaunch iMovie HD. If the JVC VCR gets powered off and back on when iMovie HD is running, iMovie HD will not be able to detect it until you quit and relaunch iMovie HD. The JVC needs to be powered on BEFORE launching iMovie HD. Quit of out iMovie HD, turn the JVC VCR power off and then back on. Then launch iMovie HD again.

Initial Setup : Do these steps before exporting or importing video!

* Quit out of iMovie HD if it's running.
* Turn the JVC VCR OFF by pressing the POWER button on the front side, upper left corner of the JVC. The word "Auto" will be displayed on the front of the JVC when it is powered off.
* On the front lower panel of the Sony monitor, press the POWER button to turn it on.

VCR/monitor Cable Connections for UP CLC labs

Step 1: Connect the JVC VCR video and audio cables:

1. On the back of the JVC VCR, near the middle, locate the 6 colored ports - 2 yellow, 2 red and 2 white. You're going to connect cables to the top row of these ports (yellow, red and white).
2. Connect a yellow male RCA cable to the top row yellow port on the JVC VCR. Connect the other end to the yellow port on the rear of the Sony monitor.
3. Connect a red male RCA cable to the top row red port on the JVC VCR. Connect the other end to one of the female ports of a Y-adapter cable.
4. Connect a white male RCA cable to the top row white port of the JVC VCR. Connect the other end of the cable to the other female port of the same Y-adapter cable.
5. Connect the single male connector of the Y-Adapter cable to the black female port on the Sony monitor.
6. Make sure that the JVC VCR and Sony Monitor power plugs are plugged into power sockets.

The cables should be connected exactly as pictured below:

CLC Macintosh Video Editing

Connect the Sony DVD Player video and audio cables to the JVC VCR:

1. On the back of the Sony DVD player, near the left side, locate the 3 ports which are colored red, white, and yellow.
2. On the back of the JVC VCR, near the left side, locate the 3 ports that are also colored yellow, red and white. These are the video and audio input ports that the JVC VCR references as the L-1 input.
3. Connect one end of the yellow cable to the yellow port on the back of the DVD player, and the other end of the cable to the JVC VCR's yellow port. Connect the red and white cables in the same manner, matching the cable connector color to the port color on each device.
4. Make sure that the JVC VCR and Sony DVD Player power plugs are plugged into power outlets.
5. The cables should be connected exactly as pictured below, with the DVD Player on top of the JVC VCR in this picture:

How to import the DVD video into iMovie HD:

* Quit of out iMovie HD, if it's already running.
* Power on the Sony DVD player by pressing the I/O button on the left front corner:

How to import the DVD video into iMovie HD:

* Quit of out iMovie HD, if it's already running.
* Power on the Sony DVD player by pressing the I/O button on the left front corner:

Hooking up the VCR/DVD Deck


Make sure that VCR/DVD deck is plugged in and powered on.

Connect the composite cables (Yellow, White, Red) from the DV Converter to the Output on the back of the VCR/DVD Deck. Make sure that the cables are plugged into the appropriate color.


Connect the Firewire cable from the DV Converter to the Firewire port on the back of the Macintosh.

Push the DVD/VCR button on the front of the deck to select which format you want to capture.

Capturing footage from the VCR/DVD deck into iMovie

With iMovie open and the VCR/DVD Deck powered on push the DVD/VCR button on the deck to select the appropriate source.

Once you see an image in the import window, cue up your footage to around 5 seconds before the clip you want to capture.

Press the import button and then push play on the VCR/DVD deck.

After your clip finishes playing push the import button again to stop the capture.
